Jan Ullrich promette battaglia al Tour de France e avverte Ivan Basso. ‘’I partecipanti al Tour sono forti, la corsa e’ differente e piu’ veloce. Basso non potra’ dominare allo stesso modo e io cerchero’ di impedirlo'’. Secondo il tedesco della T-Mobile la corsa a tappe francese, al via il primo luglio, presenta caratteristiche diverse da quelle del Giro d’Italia dominato dall’italiano.

“Basso ha la statura del favorito al Tour”. Ne e’ convinto Felice Gimondi, unico italiano vivente vincitore della Grande Boucle 41 anni fa. “Sulla prima salita vedremo subito chi stara’ meglio - ha aggiunto Gimondi - Ullrich forse ha svolto finalmente la preparazione corretta per una stagione con il solo obiettivo Tour e non sente piu’ addosso l’ombra di Lance Armstrong. Ivan Basso stasera a Castelfranco Veneto

Dopo lo stage sulle montagne del Tour de France, Ivan è stato a Londra nella sede dello sponsor Csc. Qui ha incontrato i dirigenti del gruppo, i dipendenti ed i media. “Sento molta attenzione nei miei confronti - ha precisato Basso durante la conferenza stampa a cui hanno partecipato giornalisti provenienti da tutto il mondo - e questo mi fa immensamente piacere. Chi crede però che io mi senta appagato per il successo ottenuto al Giro d’Italia si sbaglia di grosso, mi presenterò al Tour con la cattiveria giusta”. Ivan sarà impegnato, questa sera, in un circuito a Castelfranco Veneto, località a cui è molto legato e sede della squadra in cui ha militato nella categoria under 23: la Zalf-Fior.

Fra 24 giorni inizia il Tour, bisogna pensare a quello. La Csc di Ivan Basso, intanto, continua a volare: nella crono di ieri al Delfinato, il compagno Zabriskie ha stravinto su Landis, Leipheimer e Hincapie, che saranno tutti rivali di Ivan in Francia.
Tutti, ora, si aspettano da Ivan la consacrazione nel prossimo Tour de France, la corsa a tappe per eccellenza: «E’ presto per parlare di vittoria del Tour - attacca Ivan - Dopo essere arrivato terzo e secondo nelle ultime due edizioni, la volontà di fare altrettanto bene, se non meglio, è chiaro che esiste. Ma, in questi giorni, avevo bisogno di riposarmi dopo le fatiche di un Giro d’Italia indimenticabile».

Festa-lampo per Ivan Basso, trionfatore del Giro d’Italia

Accolto da una folla festante nella sua Cassano Magnago: un incontro veloce come un finale di tappa concitato, quello fra il campione e i suoi coincittadini, nel bellissimo parco della Magana. Una calca impressionante intorno ad Ivan, sereno e modesto come sempre. Tanta, tantissima gente accalcata sotto il palco preprato dalle autorità comunali per fare domande al campione, abbracciarlo, baciarlo, stringergli la mano, strappargli un autografo, una foto. Amici, fan, parenti e soprattutto un gran numero di bambini e bambine, a testimoniare l’affetto per uno sport, il ciclismo, che non ne vuole sapere di passare di moda.

Proprio ai più giovani Basso, dal palco, ha rivolto questo invito: “Vi consiglio davvero di provare con il ciclismo, perchè è uno sport che insegna a diventare grandi. Anche se non tutti poi diventano dei professisonisti, la bicicletta, con i suoi sacrifici e le sue fatiche fa maturare e crescere”. Magro come un’acciuga, leggero abbastanza da salire in cielo con la sua bicicletta, e forte abbastanza da farsi signore anche nelle cronometro, Basso ha avuto putroppo quasi solo il tempo di un rapido saluto: la sua scaletta era ferrea e gli imponeva di farsi trovare a Fiorenzuola d’Arda, in Emilia, alle sette, per un altro appuntamento: il prezzo del successo.

«La mia famiglia è la cosa più grande che ho. Tilla è un amore, Santiago non vedevo l’ora di abbracciarlo. Domitilla se lo sta già coccolando, come se fosse un bambolotto».

«Quando apro gli occhi, penso a mia moglie Micaela e a mia figlia Domitilla. Da qualche giorno c’è anche Santiago. Al Giro avevo portato le loro foto, le tenevo sul comodino. E poi cominciavo la mia giornata. Ogni mattina, durante le ultime tre settimane la mia giornata cominciava con un messaggino a mia moglie. È il mio punto di riferimento, è il mio equilibrio».

Victory in Giro d’Italia 2006

Team CSC and Ivan Basso were able to celebrate an impressive triumph, when the team’s Italian superstar stepped onto the podium and claimed the overall victory in Giro d’Italia 2006 in Milan after a great race, where the team won four stages in total and Basso proved himself the strongest rider in the peloton.

”This is one of the happiest days of my life as a rider. The fact that I now stand at the top of the podium in Milan is the culmination of many months preparation, a tremendous team effort as well as a fantastic effort from everyone behind the team. I would like to say a big thanks to my team, for everything they’ve done for me in the Giro. I’ve learnt a lot during this race, and I’ve gained some valuable experience and a result, I’ve dreamt of since I started riding a bike. Now the Tour is just around the corner and I feel ready, even though I do need to spend some time with my family, before I start to consider our next big project,” said a happy Ivan Basso after his victory.

”We’ve won a great victory, which naturally is a mile stone in the history of the team and which everyone has a share in and deserves some credit for. Ivan has undoubtedly been the strongest rider in this race, and he’s shown a fantastic determination and ability to give his all. It means a lot to the cycling sport, when a new great rider enters the stage and wins one of the great races, and Ivan definitely has the class to win more great races at this level over the next few years,” said Bjarne Riis after the triumph in Italy.

Sunday’s final stage was won by Robert Förster (Gerolsteiner) in a bunch sprint.

Ivan Basso completed one of the most dominating Giro D’Italia victories in 50 years on Sunday, as Robert Forster won the Tour of Italy’s final stage in a sprint. Basso’s first win in a major tour was made possible by imperious mountain performances at the most difficult Giro in recent memory.

Basso is now the firm favourite to succeed seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong as the champion at this year’s Grande Boucle.

“The emotions of the birth of my son Santiago on Friday and then winning the Giro will stay with me for the rest of my life,” Basso told reporters after finishing with the peloton in the 21st and final stage of the three-week race.

Spain’s José Enrique Gutierrez finished second overall nine minutes and 18 seconds behind Basso, the second largest margin in 50 years.

“I’ve suffered a lot to get to where I am,” the CSC leader said. “I don’t consider myself a natural champion like some riders.

“I’ve had to work hard to improve in time trials and learn how to become a team leader. Only I know the pain I’ve been through and the sacrifices I’ve made.

Basso, the 2005 Tour de France runner-up, spent the winter preparing for his bid at a historic Giro-Tour double, focusing largely on improving his time-trial skills.

The 28-year-old Italian demonstrated his improvement by finishing second 28 seconds behind his biggest rival for this year’s TDF, Jan Ullrich, in the Giro’s longest time-trial stage.

A new King of the Mountains

But Basso earned the greatest overall victory of his eight-year career with three imposing stage-wins on three climber stages at the most mountainous Giro D’Italia in years.

“In recent years it was always me and Lance together at the end of the big mountain stages,” Basso said, recalling the Tour de France. “Now I’m on my own.”

“I’m not an extra-terrestrial or a ‘cannibal’ as some people have said. I gained time on the pure climbers in the time trial and then they lost time on the climbs simply because they didn’t ride as well as expected.”

Basso was referencing a comment by third-place finisher and two-time Giro winner Gilberto Simoni, who has accused Basso of poor cycling etiquette in pulling away from Simoni in the final three kilometres of the race’s penultimate stage on Saturday.

Simoni has since accused Basso of offering him money in exchange for Saturday’s stage-victory, a charge that Basso squarely denied.

After the race Italian television attempted to convince Simoni to shake Basso’s hand, but he refused.

“Basso deserves his Giro win but he doesn’t exist for me any more,” said Simoni.

Knowing how to race

“I think of the secret of stage racing is to know how to ride well for three weeks without ever going too deep into your reserves,” Basso said after the victory.

“This was a very hard Giro and so it was important to ration your energy and know when and where to gain time. There were seven key stages and I think I rode well on all of them.”

“In the last two years I’ve finished on the Tour de France podium twice and even made Armstrong suffer. I’ve been the same Basso as always, but with a year’s experience and improvement in my legs.

“There were days when I suffered but I manage to hide my pain when I riding and so fortunately my rivals didn’t take advantage.”

Throughout the three weeks of the Tour of Italy the Gallarate-native received strong support from the fans that lined each of the 21 stages.

“I hope people can understand who I am. I’m quite a sensitive person but I’m built like reinforced concrete.

“I think it’s important to be sincere and be honest in life, and I think people who have cheered for me along the roads of the Giro have understood that.”

Double trouble?

Though Basso was clearly the dominant figure at this year’s Tour of Italy, the competition is more difficult at the TDF, which is the sport’s biggest race.

Still, Basso believes he can continue overpowering Tour of Italy form to become the first rider to complete the Tour-Giro double since Marco Pantani did it in 1998.

“I know I’ll have to be as good or even better than I was at the Giro if I want to win the Tour de France but I really believe I can do well in both races,” Basso has said.

After the race Basso said he planned to spend some time relaxing with his family, including his new-born son Santiago. But he added that he would quickly return to the bike to start his preparations for the Tour, which begins July 1 in Strasbourg.

“I can’t celebrate and rest too much because the Tour is not far away,” he said. “This Giro has been hard but leading the race for 15 days has taught me a lot.

“I know the pink jersey is not like the yellow jersey at the Tour de France but now I feel ready to face the pressures of the Tour. I’ve never said I can win the Tour but I’m going to try.”

Vainqueur de son premier grand Tour lors du Giro 2006, Ivan Basso a tenu à souligner l’importance de Bjarne Riis dans ses récents progrès. L’apport de l’ancien coureur danois a été décisif, notamment à travers le travail effectué dans le domaine du contre-la-montre.

A quoi attribuez-vous les écarts énormes par rapport à vos suivants ?

I.B. : A ma régularité. J’ai été présent dans toutes les arrivées en altitude et dans le contre-la-montre. Ce n’est pas pour autant que je suis un extra-terrestre. Vous m’avez suivi dans les quatre derniers Tours de France, vous avez vu que j’ai progressé chaque année. Regardez les écarts à l’arrivée du Tour de France, ils sont à peu près comparables à ceux de ce Giro. Je me suis présenté au départ du Giro dans la forme du Tour. Il aurait été incorrect de venir sans être au top de ma condition.

Quel jour privilégiez-vous dans votre carrière ?

I.B. : Le jour où j’ai signé mon contrat avec CSC. Je dois remercier Bjarne Riis (manager de l’équipe danoise, ndlr). Il n’y a beaucoup de team-manager qui font sept heures de scooter trois-quatre jours de file ou qui s’occupent de l’échauffement avant un contre-la-montre comme à Pontedera. C’est lui qui m’a fait croire à mes possibilités. Il m’a dit: “c’est impossible qu’un coureur de ta force ne soit pas bon dans les contre-la-montre.” J’ai fait beaucoup d’efforts, des heures et des heures sur le vélo de chrono.

Et maintenant le Tour ?

I.B. : Je ne vais pas me relaxer. Je vais rester à la maison pendant deux-trois jours, voir notre bébé, profiter de cette nouvelle vie. Mais je monterai sur le vélo tous les jours. Ensuite, je ferai un stage avec l’équipe. Ce soir (dimanche), la fête pour moi sera finie à minuit. Je crois beaucoup dans le projet Giro-Tour. Non que j’aie la prétention de dire que je vais gagner les deux mais c’est important de courir les deux. Si je ne gagne pas le Tour, il me restera quoi qu’il en soit d’avoir remporté un beau Giro.
